**MECHANICS SPECIAL**We hate to get rid of this bucket truck because it is perfect for tree trimming. The over-center electrically insulated fiberglass boom with a one-man fiberglass bucket makes getting to low limbs easy as well as maneuvering up and over power lines. The ventilated 11 yard chip box with tool storage is clean without rust holes. We made sure to empty it every day and never let it sit with material over night. The bucket with liner always has a cover and the cab protector makes it easy to get in and out. The bucket has lower platform controls for emergencies and can go from 55ft vertical reach to right on the ground level. A two man crew can hook up a chipper and go do any trimming job with only one driver needed. Boom operations and bed lift are fast and there are two auxiliary hydraulic hookups at the bucket for saws, loppers, or hand tools. It could use a fresh coat of paint, it got its start as an Asplundh truck but was repainted to white. The interior is in great shape with a minor tear in the drivers seat. We have kept maintenance records on it since 2019 and it comes with GMC truck and Altec manuals. The rear tires are like new 'trash lug' tires similar to what garbage trucks use to get good traction in yards while running smooth down the highway. The tool and gear cabinets are spacious with a top box that is open from one side to the other. They lock securely with a rod through both doors, making them impossible to get open without lifting the bed. The GVWR is 29k so no CDL required. This truck has a solid mount pintle hitch trailering attachment with an electric brake controller in the cab. This truck comes with a 3 cylinder Kubota 'pony' motor. This means that you can run the hydraulics without running the truck motor. But, if the pony motor should experience a failure, the hydraulics can also be operated with the PTO drive from the truck motor. Very convenient, reduces wear on the motor and saves gas. We modified the fuel delivery to the pony motor. Originally there was a small electric fuel pump that would draw fuel from the 30 gallon truck tank as supply. We installed a 5 gallon poly tank on the deck to gravity feed fuel to the Kubota motor. This also allowed to only use alcohol free fuel for the pony motor for much better starting and performance.
Now for the 'mechanic special' part.
This truck has a 366 cid (6.0L) v8 gas engine and a 5 speed manual transmission (1st gear is really low). It was not designed to go over 55 mph. The transmission is geared for local, frequent, short trips (remember it was designed for Asplundh). At highway speeds, the motor is running near max RPM's. At about 75,000 miles, we found that there was a hole in one of the pistons. It was the year of the COVID outbreak so we had some downtime available. We purchased a remanufactured long block motor from Napa, who in turn, purchased from Jasper Engines. We swapped the motor and installed a new clutch pack at the same time. We replaced both exhaust manifolds, the radiator fan, the distributor, all the belts, & spark plug wires as well. We got it back on the road, passed the state truck inspection and put it back in service. All was good for about 4,350 miles. Then as we were taking it for the next state truck inspection a year later, it threw a rod through the oil pan and has been parked ever since. Even though it didn't have very many miles on the reman engine, it was a week past the 1-year warranty and Jasper would not provide support.
This truck will make some money for the person that has the time, space, and mechanic skills to either repair the current motor or install a different motor. In fact, we will include another truck in this sale for that purpose. We were offered a 1990 GMC C6000 that has the same motor and a new 4 speed manual transmission. I'm told the motor will fit and that it had about 150,000 miles on it. The transmission is said to have less than 1,000 miles on it. So there is a lot of potential here for a really low price. It would be great for around the farm, to put on your car lot, or for a startup tree service. We replaced the truck with a spider lift so it has been sitting for 4 years and it really needs a good home. Give us a call and let's see what we can work out.
